Downtime in Sommieres

We were well looked after in Sommieres, and it was nice to shower with no care for hot water and use the toilet without concern of it failing to flush properly. Simple pleasures indeed!

We didn’t do much while staying with Aurélie’s godmother, but did explore the village a bit, which is interesting for various reasons:

  • It floods pretty regularly – most properties have been designed accordingly, as it’s been doing so for centuries. The last bad one was 2002. See image below.
  • It has a properly medieval feel as you wander around, and some of the stonework dates back to Roman times (when Tiberius was emperor, if you can get your head around that)
  • Lawrence Durrell, author of The Alexandria Quartet (which my mother recommended I read, and I ultimately did, about 20 years ago) settled here

After we’d been extensively refreshed and girls spoiled thoroughly with Easter eggs, it was time to head back to Béziers airport and be whisked back to Luton and thence home. The one fly in the ointment of the trip has been 5YO has been running a temperature and thus not her usual self.
