Month of Outings 3 of 4. My wife had organised with our good friends in Lille that we would meet up halfway. They hopped over on a ferry and we trained out of London to meet in Ramsgate. I’d never been here before. Aurélie found an excellent Airbnb near the seafront. The weather was, to be overcomplimentary, patchy. Lots of rain, although we managed to avoid the worst of it by luck more than careful planning.
We didn’t take advantage of the Ramsgate Tunnels, which sounded interesting, but not a prime opportunity for five kids including two 2 year olds and a baby. Equally the Micro Museum will have to be visited on another occasion, or perhaps never.
I did rather enjoy the Petticoat Lane Emporium, which was near our place and had a really impressive array of bric a brac which almost but not quite gives the impression of maybe being a bargain. And the prices were low, for the most part.
The kids were all great together and we got some good walking in. I also managed a Sunday morning run to Broadstairs and back. Ramsgate was chosen for its convenient location, but it’s a bit lacking in charm, I have to say. There are plenty of run-down towns along the coasts of Britain, with bargain basement shops, shabby pubs and downtrodden inhabitants – it’s just a bit of a surprise that there is such a strong example so close to London. Broadstairs definitely looked a bit nicer, and I gather Margate is positively chi-chi in comparison.
