I was a late starter with running. or indeed any proper exercise. When I started at Sema Group in 1998, there were a few graduates who’d joined at a similar time. The key thing was the office was very close to the Thames in Reading and there was a lad who was training to do the London marathon. So, an informal lunchtime running club was born, doing a 5 mile loop to Tilehurst station and back. I got ok at running quite quickly, and the Reading half-marathon started in those days right near the office (at the Rivermead leisure centre) so loads of colleagues did it, so I joined in too. And that was that, I have been a runner ever since.
My first marathon was London in 2002.
