Bratislava – day 2

I got my run in, as per usual. Today’s conflict with Footpath was the trail it said I could take back along the river… didn’t exist. So I had to retrace my steps.

We had never got round to booking activities for Bratislava, so the day yawned before us with possibilities. In the end, we booked a 45 minute boat cruise using Get Your Guide, and after that booked a panoramic city tour including another visit to the castle (easier, this time!) and it also took us past Freedom Square and it’s excellent fountain, which would come in handy later.

We’d had a pit stop by the river before the bus tour. After the bus, I whizzed off on a scooter to find flip-flops (Szechenyi baths in Budapest require them and charge 10 euros a pop – and it’s not about the cost, but the thought of being in a long line waiting to buy them. Chances are there’ll be no queue and the flip-flops will be so nice, we’d love to own some, but there we are). The Eurovea mall is sizeable, and Decathlon once again came up trumps. I whizzed off again to Freedom Square where the kids were playing in the fountain. Aurélie and I refreshed ourselves at the café alongside. Really, the trip optimized for kids would be pretty cheap – playgrounds, water play and the odd museum provided it’s good. The fountain in Bratislava is awesome for kids on a hot day (which it was).

I popped to a barber’s “Freedom Barbers”, to continue the theme) and Samuel gave me a tidy-up.

In the evening, we went to a restaurant called Papillon for some local rosé and some excellent salads, plus the inevitable people-watching. Ice creams and stroll home – it’s a life one could get used to!

We all enjoyed Bratislava very much. Nice bit of history, mainly linked to the Habsburg Empire (the bus tour was packed with info – Bratislava had been the primary seat at one point before it was moved to Vienna), but all quite chilled. Not cheap, but cheaper than Vienna.
