I had a work trip straight after Chamonix which had been planned for Tenerife, but given the COVID-19 outbreak about a mile away, it hardly seemed sensible to stick with that idea. Really annoying, given the official advice remained that travel is ok, which limits how much cancellation refund could be obtained, but it’s hard to ask staff to venture into a hot zone.
Whilst in Madrid, I squeezed in a 10km run and discovered the Parque El Retiro for the first time – it’s absolutely lovely, kind of like a mix of Central Park (nice boating lake, plenty of cafés, good running routes) and Versailles (beautiful statuary and very smart people in attendance).

At the end of the little conference, I popped into the Museo Sorolla which was thoroughly enjoyable. It is Joaquin Sorolla’s old house (from 1920s-ish) and it is a slice of history, plus his pictures on the wall are really charming.
